Our brain is constantly making decisions – and we’re blissfully unaware of most of them. How taxing would it be to constantly think about breathing, blinking… oh, sorry, are you too aware of your blinking now? Well, just existing puts us at risk for making mistakes – and since design involves a lot of decision-making, it’s pretty prone for mistakes to happen too – and that’s ok.
In an era where society is creating bigger bubbles and echo chambers, where AI is molding people to pretend instead of being, where the growing norm is that tools (and not goals) define the creative process and where most brands are afraid to commit to an idea, mistakes are a breath of fresh air, because they mean we made a choice. Owning our choices and their consequences is a solid foundation we can lay our careers on. If the outcome is good, great! If not, there’s an opportunity to learn why it didn’t work and to find better solutions next time.
When our mind is the tool, everything else (whether it’s a pencil, a common software or the latest AI agent) is just a way to get to what we envision; and we should own every choice we make to achieve it.
